The number 21 blade with its curved cutting edge is one of the more traditional blade shapes and is commonly used for making various sizes of incisions in the skin and muscles. The number 21 blade is commonly used in more specialized surgeries such as cardiac surgery, uterine incisions for a C-section, and for inguinal hernia repair. This blade is the large version of the model 10 blade.

How to use the Swann Morton blades

The way a surgical blade is handled before use can determine how effectively it performs during use. There are a number of ways the cutting edge of a blade can be damaged after it has been removed from its protective foil pack.

When removing a blade from its protective package, be careful not to drop it into a metal bowl or container as this may reduce the initial sharpness of the cutting edge even before it is attached to the handle. If you must use pliers or a needle holder to remove the blade from its protective packaging, be careful not to grab the blade over the cutting edge.
